Firstly, what’s Alternative music?

 Alternative music is a term used to describe music that’s not really consumed by the mainstream audience. In Nigeria, soul music which is now categorized as alternative has gradually been accepted into the music industry. The likes of Bez Idakula and Asa were the front runners of this genre not until it was fully accepted by the Nigerian audience.

Let’s take a look at 10 Alternative artiste who has made sure the sound has come to stay in Nigeria.

1. Adekunle Gold
The orente crooner wowed us with his first single ‘Sade’ under the YBNL label. The song which is actually a cover of UK’s Boy Band One Direction’s Story of my life. Adekunle Gold went on to release hit singles such as Orente, Pick up, Work, Ire etc. His 2019 works includes Promise, Before you wake up and Kelegbe Megbe (Know Your Level). He has two studio albums; Gold and About 30.

2. Simi
The sparrow voiced songstress hit us with her first single ‘ thief ‘ but it was her second single which featured Falz ‘Jamb Question’ that got us vibing.Then both artistes conjured Soldier which was a massive hit. Simi has gone on to release hits back to back such as Joromi, Smile for me, Owanbe, Jericho, Ayo, Charlie, etc. She has got two studio albums titled Simisola and Omo Charlie Champagne.

3. Teni
Teniola Apata aka Teni Makanaki stormed the music industry with Fargin, a song that made waves. Teni made sure the audience didn’t label her a one hit wonder has she dished out hits such as Wait, Askamaya, Case, Uyo Meyo (song got some ondo vibes), Sugar Mummy and her latest, Power Rangers.,

4. Aramide
Aramide Sarumoh aka Aramide hit the music scene with Iwo Nikan in 2015, and that earned her the best vocal performance on a song at the Headies awards that year. Aramide has released singles such as Odun tun tun, Jowo, Magic, Fall on them etc. She released her first studio album Suitcase in 2016.

5. Niniola
Niniola Apata, sister to Teni is surely a force to be reckoned with when it comes to club bangers. Her hit song Maradona was a blast coupled with other singles Sicker, Magun, Oyin, Bana, Designer to mention a few. Niniola has an amazing sync with music producer Sarz.

6. Johnny Drille
John Ighodaro aka Johnny Drille wowed me personally by having the audacity to delve into Folk music in Nigeria. The Edo born singer who is currently signed to Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records has done well for himself with songs like beautiful love, Romeo and Juliet, Wait for me and Hallelujah which he had Simi Featured. Drille has three singles this year tiltled Shine, Forever and Papa. One thing about Drille is that he sings with his mouth barely opened and his voice texture is amazing.

7. Nonso Amadi
Wow, this guy…The first time I got to hear ‘Tonight ‘ I thought it was a foreign artiste that sang it not until I tried to download it and discovered he was Nigerian, though based in London. His singles include Tonight, Radio, Kwasia, Suicidal, No Crime, Emergency,. He has two albums; War EP and Alone. Nonso Amadi’s voice can steal your bae… Lol

8. Ric Hassani
Well I thought this dude was a Hausa guy until I actually discovered he’s Ikechukwu Eric Ahiauzu. The perfect gentleman himself got singles like Police, Only you, Gentleman, Beautiful to me, My love, Love you anyway etc. He dropped His Perfect Gentleman album in 2017.

9. Tjan
Fowosere Tijani Olasunmbo popularly known as Tjan hit us with a wonderful love tune ‘Aduke’ in 2016 which gained widespread recognition. Tjan has a voice texture that is soothing to the ears and his vocal dexterity is superb. He has other singles like Meji ft Ycee, one plus one, ire etc.

10. Brymo
Olawale Ashimi popularly known as Brymo came into the music industry under Chocolate City that housed the likes of M.I, Jesse Jaggz and Ice Prince. Brymo came into the limelight on Ice Prince’s Oleku in which he took the chorus. Brymo has hit songs like Ara, Good morning, Down, Eko etc
He has five studio albums; Brymstone, Thesonofakapenta, Merchant, Dealers and Slaves, Tabula Rasa and Klitoris.
